The
Power of an Hour

What is the Power of an Hour?

Our Power of an Hour programme is designed to help you build your future step by step. Our evidence is showing that just 10 interactions with volunteers outside of your usual social sphere can be transformative and open doors.

Above all, we aim to inspire and equip you with self-worth, confidence and the necessary knowledge and skills needed to navigate your way through many career opportunities.

In one session, you could discover an interest in a certain career or job type, in the next, you could meet people who’ve already made it there and learn what skills and experience you need to get a foot in the door. After that, you could meet a volunteer who can share those skills with you and help you work on your CV.

There are many opportunities out there, and we’re here to help you access them.

The lvn young people's journey - getting the power of an hour

The volunteers you can meet

We work with you to help you identify your interests and areas for development. You can ask for very specific help with homework, your CV or interview preparation, or simply explore your options and get advice and information on different industries and jobs. The hours you receive will help you grow your confidence, life skills and find a direction.

There are already hundreds of volunteers signed up to support you. These include personal trainers, musicians, lawyers, programmers, entrepreneurs, self-employed IT professionals, builders, teachers, nurses and more. They can answer your questions, share their career journey, advise you on how to enter their industry, and sometimes even offer work experience or internships.

Our support is deliberately youth-led. This means that you’re in control of your journey. You can request specific support and receive as many hours as you need.

How does the Power of an Hour work?

Signing up to a Local Village Network Host Centre on the app

To get your Power of an Hour, you’ll need to register on our app. Once you’ve created your account, you’ll be able to choose your LVN Host Centre. This is the organisation that will host the sessions you’ll attend, whether offline or online.

If you’re accessing the Power of an Hour as recommended by your youth centre, school or Jobcentre, then you can find your centre on the list. Just remember to tick the borough in which your centre is located, not just ‘London Wide’.

If you’re not part of an organisation already and are looking to get started from fresh, you can choose SoapBox Youth Centre or “Stronger Futures”.

You’ll be asked to answer some quick questions and select the support you’re interested in. This will help us understand where you’re at right now and how we can best support you.

Receiving your hour

Relax, have fun and don’t worry! You are there to meet mentors who are eager to help you. We know that meeting people outside your usual network can have a big impact on your life. Every hour really does help and you can have as many as you want.

An LVN practitioner will accompany you at all times in both face-to-face and online sessions and you will never be left alone with a volunteer. No personal information should be exchanged between yourself and a volunteer and all contact must be via an LVN practitioner (this includes email, phone numbers and social media information). You can read more on our Safeguarding Policy page to understand what we’re doing to keep you safe.

After the hour

Once the session ends, there are two main things that need to be done: letting us know your thoughts on the session, and telling us what you want to do next.

After each session we will record your attendance and you will automatically receive access to your session review in the app. This is a couple of quick questions and lets you keep a record of your progress so that you can look back and see how far you’ve come and who you’ve met. This is a useful resource to reference in interviews. It also helps us understand what support you’d like next.

After a session, you can continue to attend other group Power of an Hours like that one, and learn more about different industries and how to become more employable. If you’ve figured out what career you’d like to pursue or know your next steps, you can request group sessions with volunteers of a specific profession, or 121 sessions with a volunteer who can help you with your CV and interview preparation.

The Power of an Hour is what you make of it, and you’re in charge of steering your journey with us.
