London Green Champions - Free OCN Qualification


London Green Champions is a youth-led environmental project supporting young people to reignite their access and presence in green spaces across the capital, empowering them to become London Green Champions. The project seeks to encourage young people to learn more about the environment, discuss common interests and issues to share via multi-media outputs and get hands on with positive social action opportunities within their local communities.

Entry Criteria:

  • 12–25-year-olds
  • From Hackney, Islington, Tower-Hamlets, Lewisham boroughs
  • Ideally have an interest in Media and the environment as you will be building OCN accredited portfolios and engaging with Nature-based activities/trips and media.

Timeline & Numbers:

  • Cohort - This is the full London Green Champions programme which runs 12-weeks during term-time: Jan-Apr or May-Jul (2023). These are run as weekly Sessions at least 1.5 hours long at the young people's youth organisation/school.
  • Spring Social Action 2023, a week-long open-recruit programme run during the February Half-term comprised of a series of hands-on environmental action events e.g. Litter Picks, Tree-planting and Wildlife Photography.
  • Summer Social Action 2023, a weekly, 4/5-week social action programme running throughout the Summer Holidays Aug-Sep comprised of media production, exploration of greenspaces and social action volunteering events.

Start date: This will be at your discretion to choose which cohort (Jan-Apr or May-Jul, 2023) you would like to be involved with.

Delivery Locations:

  • Schools/Youth Organisations based in Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Hackney and Islington (but please still get in touch if you are based outside of these regions).
  • Delivery spaces - Classrooms, Youth Centres, Outdoor education Hubs.
  • Local Community Gardens and Community Organisations
  • Trips to nature reserves, exhibitions and local greenspaces

Outcomes for Young people:

  • Increased skills and knowledge  
  • Feeling heard, valued and recognised  
  • Increased resilience and wellbeing  
  • Growth in self-belief and confidence

You will receive two media-based OCN Qualifications and will create Mutli-media content to express your opinions, concerns, and experiences surrounding environmental topics. These will be shared on social media platforms and as part of a larger end of cohort showcase (Venues TBC as tailored to the young people).
